Home Aides of Central New York will be hosting an Employment Open House at our James Street Office, 723 James Street, Syracuse, on Thursday, March 1, [...]

Home Aides of Central New York will be hosting an Employment Open House at our James Street Office, 723 James Street, Syracuse, on Thursday, March 1, 2012 from 8:30 am – 10:30 am. Our organization is interested in hiring individuals to fill home health aide positions.

Locally, as well as nationally, there is a trend called a “care gap” which indicates that while our local population of elderly individuals is growing, there is also a decrease in the number of younger individuals to care for the elderly.

This “care gap” was studied by the Federal Reserve, which found Upstate New York is expected to see a 40% increase in the number of people over 65 from 2005 to 2030. At the same time, the number of women aged 25-54, the age group that typically provides most of these workers, is projected to increase by less than 1 percent. According to the National Clearinghouse on the Direct Care Workforce, the traditional care-giving workforce (women aged 25 to 44) will decrease by 13.5 percent in New York State by 2030.

Because of similar statistics nationally, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects home health aides to be the third fastest-growing occupation in the country, increasing 49 percent by 2016.

Home Aides of Central New York is the largest non-profit provider of home health aide services in the Central New York community, and holds a training class for new home health aides each month at our James Street office. Our Employment Open Houses are a chance for individuals to talk with agency representatives, ask questions, and fill out an application, if interested.

Who Can Be a Home Health Aide?

Home health aides are individuals who are interested in either a full-time career, or a part-time position to supplement their household income. They do not need medical experience, but generally do need a car for transportation. Caring and compassionate individuals are encouraged to apply. Individuals need to be available for a 13 day training class which will earn them a New York State home health aide certification. Home Aides of Central New York is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.

Individuals can also learn more by calling 315/476-4295.
